As far as I can tell the Sandbenders are based on the Tusken Raiders aka Sandpeople from Star Wars. That whole scene is ripe with Star Wars references. From the ‘lantern’ above the door looking like a Death Star to the whole Cantina set-up.

I have to admit, I halfway expected there to be band playing as well :D
